What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
We use formative assessment tools and evidence-informed teaching practices to monitor student growth and identify students’ individual learning needs, talents and areas of interest.
Tasks and activities are carefully designed to provide the correct level of challenge and extension for all students, ensuring everyone can progress and succeed.
Learning pathways are available for students, including enrichment, extension programs and acceleration opportunities, so that students are supported and extended according to their strengths and interests.
Students are provided with meaningful opportunities to apply their learning, which helps enrich their skills and deepen their understanding of content across all subject areas.
Our classrooms provide a safe and supportive environment that actively encourages students to develop confidence, take risks in their learning and persevere through challenges.
We use flexible grouping and partner work to foster collaboration and build positive relationships among students, helping them learn from one another and work effectively in teams.
Through continuous monitoring and personalised learning experiences, we ensure that all students are recognised as individuals and are challenged, extended, and supported to achieve their full potential.
Our school is dedicated to identifying and supporting students with high potential across all High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) domains — Academic, Physical, Creative and Social/Emotional. We provide targeted enrichment, extension and extra-curricular opportunities designed to nurture and challenge these students. Social/Emotional Domain
A group of Year 5 students initiated a meeting with the Principal to propose a full school musical next year. Although this wasn’t approved, they were offered a chance to help plan and produce the K-2 end-of-year musical instead.
A new HPGE group focused on musical theatre was created within the Creative and Social domain. This group experiences all aspects of musical production and uses a dedicated Google Classroom managed by the music teacher and HPGE Assistant Principal.
Each Year 5 student mentors a K-2 class by attending lessons, learning songs and choreography, and assisting younger students, while managing their schoolwork with their teachers. They have also promoted the musical through posters, class presentations, and helped with props, costumes, and ticketing via TryBooking.
Their involvement includes stage planning, set construction, and on performance day, they support setup, costume and prop management, and act as stagehands. This project gives the Year 5 HPGE students valuable leadership, collaboration, and creative experience while contributing to the school musical.
Creative Domain
We are proud to foster creativity and artistic excellence among our students and Evie Martin is a shining example of this commitment. Evie has consistently demonstrated remarkable talent and passion in the visual arts, achieving outstanding recognition through prestigious opportunities.
In 2024, Evie was chosen as the NLPS school representative for Operation Art, a highly competitive program showcasing the artistic talents of young people across NSW. Her artwork was singled out from over 600 entries by expert judges and selected to be gifted to Bear Cottage in Manly—the only children’s hospice in NSW dedicated to supporting children with life-limiting conditions. This significant honour also saw Evie’s work exhibited at the Fairfield City Museum & Gallery before it found its permanent home at Bear Cottage, bringing joy and comfort to many.
Additionally, Evie’s distinctive Op Art creation was chosen to feature on the promotional signage for the 2025 NSW Premier's Spelling Bee competition, highlighting her ability to blend creativity and community engagement.
Continuing her creative journey in 2025, Evie was again the NLPS winner for Operation Art entries. For the second consecutive year, her artwork was selected to be displayed at Bear Cottage, as well as showcased in regional exhibitions, further cementing her reputation as a talented and dedicated young artist.
Evie’s achievements are a wonderful reflection of the vibrant creative spirit at NLPS, inspiring fellow students to explore and express their artistic talents in meaningful ways.
Physical Domain
I’m Jessie W, and I have been given the opportunity to represent NLPS at The Sydney North cricket trials in 2026.
I first became interested in cricket after watching the Big Bash League with my dad in Year 2, although I had been to the 2018 Ashes and various other games when I was younger. Soon after that, my grandma started teaching me how to play and I watched lots of games to learn the rules.
To me, cricket means a lot. After joining Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club in Year 3, I’ve made lots of friends and enhanced my skills. I love playing with my friends on Saturdays and Wednesdays, but I also love sitting on the couch at home and watching the Ashes or BBL, which are some of my biggest sources of inspiration.
A player that I really look up to is Nathan Lyon; an Aussie off-spinner who plays for both the Melbourne Renegades and the Australian team. He's my favourite not only because his number is 67, but also because he’s the Aussie’s main spin bowler, with 14 years and 562 test wickets under his belt. It’s no wonder his nickname is the GOAT!
I’m really looking forward to going to the Sydney North trials in February so I can develop my skills and learn more about the game. Over the past year, I’ve really tried to improve my batting and I hope the trials will give me a chance to show my hard work. I would love to make it through to the next level, but I’m also proud of how far I’ve gotten this year in my cricket journey. I’d also like to thank Mr Casey for nominating me and giving me the opportunity to try out for this team.
